I write, edit, and illustrate out of our stone Pennsylvania German farmhouse.
For adults, I am the author and illustrator (in watercolor) of books for W.W. Norton, Countryman and Artisan. The Artisan title, A Celebration of Heirloom Vegetables, was a National Horticultural Society book of the year. I've done nonfiction children's books for Macmillan, Pantheon, and Little, Brown. My illustrations have appeared in the Washington Post, Yankee magazine, and titles by Chronicle and New York Botanic Garden.
I've published short fiction in Southern Review, Massachusetts Review, Shenandoah, Crab Orchard Review, Pleiades, Cimarron, and Sycamore Review. I’ve been a Pushcart nominee, was a National Magazine Awards finalist, and have been supported by a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
